Lovers, it was said, were connected by invinsible threads tied to the bones of their ribcages, so that the tiniest tug could alert one to the approach of the other. Lovers, like some strange species of insect, developed a hundred antennae for the purpose of responding to a single caller. In a room filled with sound, they caught each other's faintest whispers; in a room of continuous activity, each noted the other's smallest movements of head, eye, lip.
