He held her hand and said, "As long as I have you..."

And she said, putting her hand on his, "I will never leave you," and knew then that she would be uttering, for his benefit, one falsehood after another. Love, in the presence of a greater imperative, hides itself behind a hundred untruths.

What about me? What about you? The petty claims of egoistic vanity had to be made, for neither would let the other be the greater sufferer in love's bruising. So the accusations flew to and fro, ringing violently against each other, hard and brutal.

And everytime she thought she could love them back, her heart whispered its most urgent message: "Run, before it's too late."
